Care and Mind September 28, 2007

Another topic that I wanted to write about for some time now. Some of the people have been saying ‘I dun care’ a lot. In fact, I noticed that these are the people who get offended or irritated most easily.
They always seem to say ‘I dun care’ about this or about that. Maybe that is true in a way. They do not want to care but they mind.
So what is it when they say that they dun care. Well, its not that the subject in question does not mean anything to them. In contary, the subject normally meant that it is biting close to the bone.
‘Care’ is something that they consciously do not want to put themselves through. ‘Mind’ is something that disturbed them (emotionally, mentally, physically, etc etc) even when it is true unconcious effort.
A mosquito bites us. We do not care for that to happen but it sure itches the hell out of us and we mind a whole lot about it.
So the next time a person says ‘I dun care’.. do note that the subject is bugging the hell out of them… and probably a lot too.

There are many reasons that affect our decisions. Or at least we think so.
How did we decide on anything depends on what we view as the important factors or reasons. But are they always the right factors or reasons? We are always looking at issues through our sphere of life. What is important to one person may varies greatly to another person. Many times, we need someone else to point out the real factors that affect the situations. The so called objectives point of view. The calm mind that maps out the situation without bias.
Take for example of parents deciding for a child in what will affect the child’s future. They urge the child to study hard and go through the formal education. They guide the path of studies…science, arts, etc. In the view of the parents, they are doing what is best for the child. Or are they? What if Einstein’s (boy..we always hear him as an example, dun we?) parents decide that he should do economics to help run the administration of the family business than doing mathematics? What if Tiger Woods’ parents decide that he should go into law rather than hitting around a ball? The thing is it really good for a child depends on what parents feel is best for a child.
Its difficult to take our ownselves out of this kind of decision. When the child goes into what parents feel negative about, will the parents be supportive or will they be unhappy?
Putting that into other perspective of our own lives, we are in a lot of situations that we thought we are doing what is best for someone else. But is it really?
That little island September 22, 2007

On this little island, the people are built to be middle class. As in the games ‘Sims’ or the mindless followers, the people are herd towards what is good for the middle class mainstreams. Of those who cannot follow the education curriculum, this group are (hopefully) be able to stand out on their own as entrepreneurs. Otherwise, they will be given the lower income status and get what little relief packages that is being offered.
In this, the effort was successful. As long as everyone is satisfied and secure..with a roof over their heads and a job that requires most of their time. No one is free to think about revolt. No one wants to upset what security there is. That is sound thinking.
Recently, I was told not to link everything to legislature herding. Well, it just cannot be. With security to lose, there is not enough time to be kicking a ball around. So football for the island is just being local league and no hope for the worldcup. With mindless middle class thinking, no time is devoted to fanatical following for non mainstream activities. For financial intensive sports, such as motor sports, there is just not enough followers to attract businesses to put money into advertising in those areas. The A team is shut down even before the news of the F races coming to the island. There is just no culture for following in sports…a non mainstream item.
So why are we still doing this? Well, its for the main stream businesses to attract foreigners, of coz.
There is nothing wrong with that. But we just have to recognize that. It is perfectly alright to be herded toward middle classhood.

Went to CGH again last week to discuss our complaint to them about unprofessional staff behaviour and irregularities in their reporting system.
The summary of the story is that my darling girlfriend was admitted for a suspected condition and told them about some conditions that she had since childhood. But they never took note of it until before the surgical procedure. Later, they argued that according to documentation, all procedures are properly done. But thats our exactly our point!! It is NOT recorded in the first place, so how can they base their investigation from their faulty documents. So if you ever go there, make sure that you countersign what the doctor documented to ensure what you tell them is recorded properly…even if you are dying or holding your intestines or coughing out blood.
We also complained about the doctors are not very responsive and the senior doctors treated the patients in a very degrading manner. Furthermore, instead of giving proper information, they tried to divert attention from what is of importance. I know that you will probably be at a loss at what I am saying here. I am not giving any examples, so just take my word for it. The funny part is the explanation given was that CGH is a training hospital and they get ‘intern’ doctors to attend to the patients. So there you have it. If you do not want to be treated by inexperience doctors, go elsewhere. In any case, if it is a ’school’ for young doctors, shouldn’t CGH be even stricter on these young doctors?
Remember:
- Milo is food.
- Doctor do not speak layman. If he does, make sure he writes it down.
- If you are ever require to be cut open, make sure you get a second opinion FROM a different hospital that does not train intern doctors.
- Ward C means Cheap and you cannot expect doctors to treat you properly.
- Medisave is an account for hospital to charge you, even for procedure that you do not need.

Titled ‘Duck, Here comes Super Teacher’ is a report on a teacher who is taking punishment into his own hands. Personally, I think corporal punishment has its place in the classroom. Students are getting too unruly in the world. I always hear my teacher friends complained that girls are even tougher than boys coz they can cry wolf about sexual harassment and the teachers involved will be black marked for the rest of, not just their career but, their lives.
I was reading the GTO series again. And this story reminded me of it.

TOKYO (Reuters) – A Japanese teacher who threw a chair at his students was named “super teacher” by the local board of education despite having been reprimanded several times for using corporal punishment, a news agency said on Saturday.

The 52-year-old high-school teacher in Kyoto has been awarded the title every year since 2005 in spite of a history of aggression in the classroom because his strict teaching methods improved his students’ performance.
He was punished three times between 1997 and 2001 for physically attacking students, including throwing a chair at the volleyball team he was coaching, and was again accused of corporal punishment this year, Kyodo news agency said.
The teacher, who was not identified in the news agency report, resigned on Friday, having been on medical leave since the latest accusation. He was selected as a role model due to his “outstanding achievement in leading the volleyball team,” Kyodo said, citing board officials.
Japan’s school system has been at the centre of heated political debate for some time. Some politicians have demanded stricter discipline at Japanese schools, including harsher forms of punishment, to improve overall standards.
But others say that school children are already under too much pressure due to a heavy workload, a strict exam system and frequent cases of bullying.

My darling complained that I havent been updating my blog much recently. So I am going to provide an update today.
This is something that has been bothering me for quite a while, but I have never got around to talk about it. Did you know that the first wednesday of the month is when supermarkets charges u for plastic bags? I think its so much of a bullshit. The radio stations have been going on about how wonderful it is. That we are doing our part to save the environment, even when it is pure bullshit. Yes, the consumers now has to bring their own bags. Possibly those canvas ones. But does it really help the environment? I doubt it. It simply pass the cost of plastic bags to consumers. Those plastic bags are normally use to pack rubbish, which goes down the chute. Of course, some people are saying that using the plastic bags as rubbish bags are what causes an environment issue. The final point here is that if we dun use those from supermarkets, we will still need to buy them. Bags are provided as a service and cost of doing business. Supermarkets that do not provides bags are just cutting cost and transferring them to consumers.
Now LTA has also made a boo-boo with the renewal of road tax. When you buy a new car, you will have 1) the registration date of the car, 2) the road tax registration, 3) the insurance issuance. The problem comes when you buy a used car. LTA now requires the insurance to cover the period of the road tax. Unless you buy a used car on the anniversary, you insurance will be lacking and not be able to cover the road tax period. 2 solutions to this problem. A) Pay the insurance 2 years up front or B) align the registration date to the insurance date at LTA office. Then when it comes to inspection period on the 3rd year, you will have another problem if the inspection date, which follows the registration date, is too far off from the ‘aligned’ date with insurance. Stupid ruling. It is a great idea to ensure that cars have insurance, but its not well thought out.
Anyways, I have been watching anime again. Recently, I am captivated by this new series, Major, which depicts a talented but somewhat selfish baseball player through his childhood to adulthood. Somehow, I like the rival, Toshiya Sato.
Lastly, we experience 4 earthquakes aftershock last week. Its just scary that Singapore is starting to experience aftershocks so often these days.

Received an email invitation from my secondary school today to join the alumni. Suddenly, I felt those days in secondary school once again.
We have a different set of world view in those days.
We remember what we want to remember. We forgot the things that are bothering us. We are sad now for the past.
There is really nothing different between now and then and hereafter. Be happy.
