Earth hour. I think its a complete waste of resources to market this concept. Based on a California data, the movement is a complete bust. I am not even going to waste time looking for the results in SG.

If you are interested in reading the results based on California, here is the link:

Before 50cents, there is already a 500 in Taiwan. He is really one hell of a rocker…a live performer. See the difference in POWER of the same song in a MV and a live concert.

Discipline in schools March 24, 2009

An article was published in the Today newspaper about a PR of 4 years wrote about her shock of public caning used in local schools as a disciplinary option. To put it simply, caning works when used correctly.

Sigh…I remember caning well. I was from a boys’ school. Teachers practically walked around with a cane in their hands. It really motivate us to remember our homework. No dogs ever ate my homework. We behaved ourselves (in public at least).

When I went to secondary school, the education system started to get humane. Schools are required to follow a strict procedure before they can administer caning to a student. My secondary school was knowned for its relationship with gangs outside of the school. My first year there was filled with threats and fights. Going into second year, a big fight happened. The school discipline masters acted. That was the first public caning. For the next 4 years, all those who witness the caning behaved. Even the gangs affliated groups toned down. No more open threats or backyard fights.

Discipline of this kind is not confine to any one culture. How we evolve is a matter of how it will work with the local conditions. Our local system do not encourage free thinking. We are trained to follow a path, which is chosen according to our results. We need such conditioning. We are not allowed to think ‘outside of the box’. Such is the culture that provides a secure environment…as long as we have the same set of leaders.

Dancers are not human March 20, 2009

This song has been playing a lot on the radio during my drive time. I like listening to radio for the traffic reports when I drive. Other than that, radio sux.

The song is ‘Human’ by the Killers. If you have heard it, ever wonder why they put the comparison of being human to being dancer? Dancers are human too, aren’t they?

After some research and verification, I found this piece of information put on Yahoo Answers:
—-
“Are we human, or are we dancer” was taken from a journalist Hunter S. Thompson before he committed suicide, Flowers said this is where he got that line, and the deeper meaning behind that line is this:

In this song, dancer is used as a metaphor for an orchestrated, rehearsed act. Something without individuality. Without emotion i guess, like a hollow act. A dancer has no room for individuality when in groups(like a person in society) they have to follow an exact pattern that everyone else does. If you’ve ever seen a dancer screw up, it’s very noticeable. so when he says are we human or we dancer, he is comparing someone who is human(not as a species, but as a quality, human means emotional and individual; able to think for oneself). Then the word dancer in this song is also used as a quality, not as a noun. Which is why there is no ’s’ at the end, because he wants to stress that he doesn’t mean a bunch of dancers, but rather that he’s asking if the world is full of the dancer quality. It’s the same reason there is no ’s’ at the end of human, because he could’ve said “Are we humans, or are we dancers” but that doesn’t bring about his deeper meaning, which is why he is using ‘dancer’ and ‘human’ as qualities, or adjectives.

Its still weird.
